On a family visit over the Memorial Day weekend, we saw several excellent exhibits at the San Diego Museum of Art.  Quilts and Color from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston is all about color and inventive designs found in the amazing early American quilts from the collection of Paul Pilgrim and Gerald Roy.  The exhibit flowed well with the curator's choice of groupings:  chromatic vibrations, mixtures, gradations, harmonies, and optical illusions.  Some striking pieces are included.  I kept returning to a number of beautiful Amish designs - simplicity and rich, harmonious color.  The one below is an example (no photos allowed in the exhibit, of course).

Also on show Brush and Ink: Chinese Paintings from The San Diego Museum of Art Selected by Pan Gongkai  intended to highlight the traditional technique of brush and ink painting from the 15th century to the present.  There were serene paintings on fans and scrolls.  The SDMA has a remarkable collection of Asian art.  Contemporary Chinese artist, Pan Gonkai created 6 works for the museum which are also in the exhibit.   "Noble Virtues" (50 feet long) is a stunning painting.   To see it, and read more about Pan click this link.

Both exhibits run through September 4, 2016.

Spring at the Huntington

I find inspiration at the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens, and enjoy visiting often.  ( I feel fortunate to have friends who love going as much as I do!)  You may have seen my posts and photos from this remarkable place.  I like to approach each new visit with a fresh eye.  Here is what caught my attention this week, including lots of textures.  Enjoy!

Caves, Photos and More

Getty Walkway
Getty Walkway

I've had a lovely birthday week that included adventures with friends.  We went to the Getty Center, a favorite birthday haunt.  Some tremendous exhibits now on, including the fascinating Cave Temples of Dunhuang which is open through September 4, 2016.

On the edge of the Gobi Desert, near the ancient town of Dunhuang, China, hundreds of cave temples were carved into a cliff face and decorated with Buddhist wall paintings and sculptures from the 4th through 14th century.

Besides the gallery exhibition, there is a 3-D immersive film experience, and  a 1:1 replica of 3 caves (wonderful way to get a sense of the caves).  All excellent filled with rich visuals and information.  This exhibit highlights over 25 years of collaboration between the Getty Conservation Institute and the Dunhuang Academy to protect and conserve the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Worlds apart from Buddhist caves are these extensive current photo exhibits-  Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect Medium  and The Thrill of the Chase: The Wagstaff Collection open until July 31, 2016.  Mapplethorpe's work is sometimes controversial, however there is no doubt in my mind that he had an impeccable eye for light, tension and composition.  Loved his flower photos!  If you want an education in the history of photography, see the Wagstaff collection.  Each exhibit needs time properly absorb it!  I aim to visit all these exhibits again before they close.

Another adventure this week was a long overdue visit to the Griffith Park Observatory.  Enjoy the photos.

Unsung aloneness is where your process is permitted to take root and grow, unfettered by outside influences. Let your skill, style and work develop over time in the company of your cold, hard grit.

Sonata series continues.  Yet lately I am distracting myself away from digging deeper in the process.  One moment I am with the work, the next I find myself on a different project, checking email, or making a snack.  Sound familiar?  There is more to explore here if I stay with it.

An interesting Painters Keys post from Sara Genn this week on the subject of introverts.  I am one, and can relate especially with this line:  "I need to be quiet to be creative".  Love my solitude.. all in balance of course.  How about you?

Sharing some photos from a recent contemplative Creativity Lab... my favorite ongoing gatherings which link meditation and creative process.  Not focused on product, each month's class explores a different medium within meditative process.  Gestural calligraphy was the vehicle this time.  Obviously the ink painting has influenced my own creative work....
