Around Town

Friends and I went to see the terrific exhibit Sam Francis: Five Decades of Abstract Expressionism from California Collections at the Pasadena Museum of California Art.  It is an excellent retrospective of his work and was the first time I had seen such a comprehensive collection of his work in one place.  Francis began to paint, using it as a healing process during a serious illness as a young man.  Even during his final illness in the 1990's, he was a prolific painter.  He traveled much and  maintained studios in France, Switzerland, Japan and California.  The work is a joy to see.  Color, form and space within the pieces invite contemplation.  I was not surprised to learn he was influenced by Zen Buddhism. Don't miss this if you are in the Los Angeles area... it closes on January 5th.

Traveling the Silk Road is one of the current special exhibits at the Los Angeles Natural History Museum.  It is a fun hands on exhibit to explore. Exhibit runs through April 13, 2014.  While there we visited the Rose Garden, still rich with blooms, and basked in the warm summerlike weather.  This is December???!

Happy New Year to you!

Let us thank the Earth
That offers ground for home
And holds our feet firm
To walk in space open
To infinite galaxies.

Warm wishes to you and your family for a peaceful Winter Solstice and Holiday season!

Clock is ticking...

Christmas cactus in bloom

Some baking done, tree is up yet to be decorated...  Still working on some holiday projects...cannot post pictures now, maybe later.  There must be something about a deadline that motivates me...the holiday comes at the same time each year, but I don't begin until late, and even come up with new ideas.  Sigh.

In the meantime, I wanted to share some links with you.  Here are thoughts to inspire especially when things are not going so well...  read David Limrite's blog about Having fun while not having fun!  Thoughtful advice (and you can subscribe to David's e-newsletters from his website).

Here are several local exhibits I plan on seeing.  Now on at the Pasadena Museum of California Art is Sam Francis: Five Decades of Abstract Expressionism from California Collections which runs until January 5, 2014.  Opening December 20th through March 2, 2014 right around the corner at the Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena is Ralli Quilts: Contemporary Textiles from Pakistan.  Both exhibits look interesting...  more to be posted when once I see them.

Appreciating the Day

With Pacifying Passion

It was a gorgeous, warm day as I headed south by train to attend the SAQA Fiber Reactions exhibit reception last Saturday, 12/14.  Even Union Station was decked out for the season.

I met my sister and Mom in Solana Beach, and we then drove to the Poway Center for the Performing Arts.

The views below are of the lower lobby of the theater, which is light and airy.  The exhibit is hanging both in the lower area and upstairs ( I only took pictures of the work and not the upper space itself).  There was a good crowd in attendance.

Here are a some selected quilts:

California Dreaming: Asilomar by Sally Gould Wright

Winter Solstice by Trish Charity

Turning a New Page by Kathy Piper

Nostalgia by Paulette G. Landers

Red Fractals by LeeAnna Yater

Cosumel Musings by Linda Friedman

Gardeners Life By Desiree Habicht

I was appreciative to have family and friends there. Thanks to L.A. friends who braved the traffic to come down for the day.  Sharing the experience and the work makes it all worthwhile.  It is good to catch up with colleagues, too.  Thanks to Mary Tabar for curating the exhibit... it looked great!  My small group went out for a delicious early dinner at a local Thai restaurant.  It was a long, yet satisfying day.

I invite you to go see the exhibit, which runs until December 31.

One last reminder about the reception this Saturday, 12/14 from 1-3pm, for the exhibit  "Fiber Reactions" at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts at 15498 Espola Road, Poway, CA 92064.

A friend ordered a set of blank prayer flags.  She is organizing a fundraiser to help pay for medical costs for a friend who is ill.  Both she and her friend were past participants in my Bhavana Project.  I am happy to see the healing offshoots from the project that connects community.

For the better part of a week I tried to keep a virus at bay, but finally had to surrender to it.  Rest seemed to be what I needed as I now regain energy.  Difficult to stop "doing" during a season with seemingly endless projects to complete.  Keep it simple is what I tell myself each year...not always listening!

While resting, I watched a Craft in America marathon over the weekend.  Wonderful to see these episodes again and be inspired!  Such amazing artists...  FYI, there is a new episode coming up on December 20th on PBS stations.  We are fortunate here in Los Angeles to have a Craft in America Center to see work and exhibits in person.

Glad I had finished this gift quilt before Thanksgiving.  Here is a detail shot, not to give too much away in case someone related reads this.

Looking back...

I am not keeping up... and the busy season is only just beginning.  So, allow me backtrack to revisit the last SAQA regional meeting and holiday extravaganza on November 16th.  The event was hosted by two of our regional reps, Deborah Stanley and Teresa Shippy.  They do a wonderful job, ensuring each is meeting interesting and fun.

You may remember that I had been making bowls for the event... even with minimal sales, the meeting proved to be good motivation to build up stock on bowls for the future.  About 1/3 of the attendees had various items for sale from artwork to jewelry to stamps for fabric.  Show and tell was included during the meeting with the sharing of recent news/work.  We have a very productive membership that includes international exhibitors and prestigious award winners (Patt Blair and Sherry Kleinman won prizes at IQF's World of Beauty this year).

It proved to be a wonderful gathering with yummy food potluck style.  I always learn something new at these events for which I am grateful.
