Winter Approaches

A wonderful reminder that we can simply uplift ourselves.  Something I have needed to hear this week with its challenges, which included cat nursing.  Thanks to Leslie Rinchen-Wongmo for the quote.

On a break from making bowls, I revised an older piece, "Winter", by adding machine couching and hand embroidery.  They add more interest and sparkle to the quilt, in my opinion.  What do you think of the changes?  (Disregard the difference in colors in photos below. I did not change that element.)  The sun is double appliqued - white over yellow over the background.  The undulating icicle lines are fusible applique on the raw silk hand dye.  I used metallic embroidery thread for some subtle detailing.

Joyful Art

I had the the opportunity to meet and experience a demonstration/teaching by master Japanese calligrapher (Kanji artist) Takeda Souun at my meditation center.  His artwork is highly praised for its innovative, yet traditional way of expressing the beauty of the Japanese spirit.  Souun tries to create work which inspires people with appreciation and happiness. He believes that if a person is filled with a sense of well-being and gratitude, she/he can return this feeling for others. The wave of well-being will spread exponentially through society, to eventually build a more peaceful world.

He is playful and down to earth, with a joyful presence.  In his halting English, he described himself as a "lucky boy".  We in the audience were encouraged to come up and join him in practicing some calligraphy (and not just with Japanese characters).  It was a fun and uplifting experience!  This is his first trip to the U.S.  I am sure he will charm audiences on his travels.

On Saturday November 16, 2013, our SoCal/SoNevada regional SAQA group will be having a Holiday Extravaganza and meeting for members to sell handmade items.  I will be offering my recycled thread bowls, with a range of designs including spirals, hearts and more.  As you can see from the photo below, I have been having fun with the new sun bowls.  Looking forward to seeing SAQA members and their wares in Orange County next month.

"Linear Moves" is on the move again!   It will be on show in Special Exhibits with Quilts on the Wall Artists collection Black and White with a Twist at the Pacific International Quilt Festival XXII  opening in Santa Clara, CA from October 17 - 20, 2013.  This festival is said to be the largest quilt show on the west coast.
The Santa Clara Convention Center is located: 5001 Great America Parkway, Santa Clara  95054. Take a look at the exhibit if you are planning to attend PIQF.

We had a rainy day has been far too long since the last rain in this parched SoCal climate, and it was glorious.  Fall is here (at least for a few days until it warms up again)!  While it rained, I tried out a new idea using sun imagery for the thread bowls, with pleasing results.  What do you think??

Extreme Quilters

Sunday was the opening reception for Extreme Quilters 4th Annual “Art from Cloth" exhibit at the Thousand Oaks Community Gallery.  Show runs through October 21, 2013.  Exhibit hours: daily from 10 am to 5 pm.  The Thousand Oaks Community Gallery is located at 2331 Borchard Road, Newbury Park, CA.

Extreme Quilters is a group of 25 contemporary textile artists from the Conejo Valley, CA, and beyond who produce a wide range of provocative art pieces.  The reception was a full and lively event on a very warm fall day.  There are always so many wonderful things to see, and this year was no exception.  Participating artists include:

I found myself going back again and again to look at Paula Chung's xray imagery, and Loris Bogue's cityscape.  Color, texture, details!  There is also the gift shop with smaller items for sale by the artists... I am the happy owner of one of Pamela Price Klebaum's glass necklaces!
