Flag Project

Community Prayer Flags

Virginia and Friend, Olympia 2006

Set 1- England 2005, Suwon

In 2005 I developed The Bhavana Project, a creative group work inspired by the tradition of Tibetan prayer flags.  The idea first grew out of a writing session in Sharon Kagan's Visual Journal workshop sparked by the question "What would you create with unlimited resources?"  Sharon encouraged me to pursue the idea.  The Bhavana Project was on its way.

For the project name, I chose bhavana (pronounced bhaa-vana), which is a Sanskrit word describing the visualization of intention.  This word best expressed the inner spirit of the work.  Friends and other participants were invited to embellish a flag with a positive intention to share with the greater community.  Initially, many did not feel they were creativeyet in the end found joy and playfulness in the very act of creating.  Everyone has gained benefit from joining in.

As participant and facilitator, I have also been enriched by the community and the process. There is a flow of energy and connection in the project.  The third set is currently in progress, with the theme "Reflections on Peace".  Stay tuned to see how these flags will evolve!

Set 1- Zabriskie Point 2006, Karen and Sharon

Set 2- Arizona 2007

Over the years I have organized smaller sets for specific individuals, including one grieving the loss of a parent and another facing serious illness. This creative avenue allowed loved ones to send their support in the form of the flags, becoming a healing journey for both giver and receiver.  I also teach flag workshops for small groups.  Trusting your creative voice can bring heart and beauty to life.
