A Sacred Tibetan Tradition...

Silk Thangka by Leslie Rinchen Wongmo
Silk Thangka by Leslie Rinchen Wongmo

Saturday was a fine springlike day, the perfect time for drive north to the Transformative Arts Studio Open House in Oxnard.  It was a celebration day for Leslie Rinchen Wongmo's new studio space.   I was introduced to Leslie's amazing work through a mutual TAFA membership.  Our connection has been online up till now, so it was especially delightful to meet in person and see her work.  Photos cannot match the experience of actually seeing these pieces in real life.  Stunning!

Leslie Rinchen Wongmo is one of the only westerners trained in India in the rare Tibetan Buddhist art of silk appliqué thangkas.  These detailed textiles include silk wrapped horsehair for fine lines with an array of colorful silks and brocades.  In addition to creating thangkas and other textile pieces, Leslie keeps the tradition alive by sharing the work through her teaching.  Learn more on this introductory video.

The expansive light filled space will house Leslie's work, along with related future workshop offerings by other teachers.  I wish her well with this new endeavor!

Entwine

"May the outward and the inward man be at one."

Introducing a new quilt in my black and white series: "Entwine", 28"h x 17.25"w.

I have tried something different with the center section of this piece.  Once the ink drawing was complete, it was machine quilted to wool felt and washed.  As you know, I have used this technique on numerous other works, but none in this particular series.  I like the texture of white on white, adding more dimension to stark lines.  The borders were pieced on with more machine quilting to finish.

This has been a welcome break to paperwork!

I am sharing this on Off the Wall Fridays.  Visit the link to see more wonderful work...
