Soul Connections

Revisiting flags in Bhavana Project's second set... In 2007 Cindie Wolf received the flags around the same time as her newly adopted daughters moved in.  A rich time for expression!  She wrote: "I really enjoyed creating my flag and feel as though part of my intention was being fulfilled as I had the flags in my possession, even though I hadn't actually completed my flag..."
She created a lovely mandala to that heartfelt time.

Celebrating Color

Last night, I attended a talk by Kaffe Fassett wonderfully organized by one of my local guilds, Westside Quilters.  Admittedly I was not that familiar with the artist, author and designer, so was interested to learn more.  He gave a lively talk about his fascination with color and pattern.
A California native, Mr. Fassett settled in England in the sixties.  While in Scotland he discovered the wonderful array of yarn colors derived from the infinite, subtle colors in the landscape.  This was his intro into the world of knitting, and the rest is history....  I was struck by what he said about the yarns, for that was my experience as well during my time living in northern England.  So many amazing yarns that I was unable to find in the States at the time.  Happily, that is no longer the case.
It was fascinating to hear about Mr. Fassett's process...how he uses pattern seen in everyday life to inspire his fabric.  He hand paints, hand quilts and hand knits.  I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and was uplifted by his use of colors and patterns.  Thank you, Westside Quilters!

Happy to report that Striations sold yesterday at the online SAQA Auction!  It has found a new home in Canada, and the proceeds will help support SAQA's exhibitions, catalogs and outreach programs.  The Auction has one week to go with the third section beginning tomorrow, September 26th at 2:00p Eastern.  The remaining quilts from the first two sections are available in the SAQA store.

Completing Projects

Here are three pieces that have been on my work wall this summer.... first, with more in Striations series...applique, hand embroidery and couching, machine quilted....

Striations 3 by Linda A Miller

Now is moving in a different direction for me, beginning with calligraphy on cotton.  This center section was then quilted, pieced with borders and more quilting.

And finally, Heart's Vision... which was revised by cropping off from the top, adding hand embroidery, appliqueing on tears made with thread and watersoluble stabilizer.  The original quilt was pieced, appliqued, thread painted and machine quilted.  Below are the before and after shots-

I am pleased with the results.  What do you think?

Gift of Sunshine

I created and gave this flag to a friend and neighbor who is very ill... to send a little sunshine his way.  I love using sun images, personally finding them healing and energizing to work with.  What better way to share something?  Saying beyond words,  "I am thinking of you."
Many years ago, when moving across the street to a new apartment, Mike kindly gave me a staghorn fern that he couldn't house in the new place.  Over the years it has done really well in my yard, in fact, doubled in size growing through the lattice to the backside.  The wonder of nature!  He would appreciate that.

For the past 18 years I have taught an adaptive yoga class for the local chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to a wonderful enthusiastic group.  This summer, when the NMSS could no longer fund the class, its future was uncertain.  Happily the management at the facility, where we have held classes for a number of years, generously decided to donate the space to us, allowing students to continue to benefit from yoga in the familiar welcoming environment.  Thank you Angel City Body Kinetics!

These flags, inspired by the flag for my neighbor, are in celebration of the sun shining brightly on our class again.

End of Summer News

I received wonderful news in my inbox yesterday.  Fluid Fissure has been juried into “Interpretations 2011” at Visions Art Museum: Contemporary Quilts +Textiles. This biennial exhibition presents art quilts by Visions members running November 4th through January 22, 2012.  The Museum is located at 2825 Dewey Road, Suite 100, San Diego, CA 92106.   I am honored to have a piece in this show.

On another note, Contentment, has sold!  I am thrilled that the quilt that was created so effortlessly has found a new home.
