Bhutan Prayer Flag at the Smithsonian

My friend, Penny, sent me this prayer flag, along with photos, from the Smithsonian Institute's Folklife Festival last summer! It is wonderful to see other countries that have a similar tradition to Tibet. She thought this was a prayer for the house (please excuse if the flag is shown upside down, for anyone who can read it!) For info about the yearly festival go to www.folklife.si.edu/festival2008

Creativity

How to keep the creative flow moving when I am limited by injury, and for the time being, cannot do much at the machine...finishing this piece begun before the holidays was one way to satisfy my artistic voice. It incorporates rubbings, painting, and threadwork. I am spending time with my sketchbook. There are so many ways to find expression. What is important is to keep my hand in..making a practice of artmaking.

The Third Set Begins!

Drawing from my Vedic chant studies for the first flag, I have written "may we be protected and nourished, so that the work we do may flourish with energy, clarity and friendship". This short translation comes from the peace chant traditionally done between teacher and student to begin studies. It seemed an appropriate way to start, as the theme is Reflections on Peace. Peace seems to be an element that is most needed in many lives right now. The flags are now winging their way to Maui for Lahar to add her creative touch.

Let's launch Bhavana Project 3 with these lines from the late John O'Donohue's beautiful book "To Bless the Space Between Us" -

Though your destination is not yet clear
You can trust the promise of this opening;
Unfurl yourself into the grace of beginning
That is at one with your life's desire.
